Hi John, please introduce yourself to our readers

I run the technology partnership and marketing groups for Zixi, a provider of software that allows broadcasters to send live, and live linear video over IP networks. At a high level I help our ecosystem of now 200+ technology partners integrate Zixi in to their offerings for the simplicity of use of our mutual customers, and deliver the messaging of our rapidly evolving innovation to the market.

Could you name 3 tech trends that you predict will take off in the next few years?

It has become obvious that 5G is going to have a substantial impact on the M&E vertical specifically, and the entire market in general as soon as 2021 with really cool applications like 4K and even 8K video consumption on your device, and different forms of VR and augmented reality. Along those same lines of connectivity, the launch of smaller-scale, affordable IP satellites will create internet paths in space for multi-purpose use. And the real use of AI and machine learning is right around the corner that will enable the increased efficiency in network operation centers making the analysis of video much more efficient.

What are some innovations created due to COVID19 that caught your attention?

First, we saw how adaptive the industry can be when they are forced to be. With the lockdowns in March we saw some of our biggest broadcast customers transition overnight not only their studio production to remote locations, but the thousands of support staff deploying, monitoring and managing remote operations from home. To do this they needed to fully embrace cloud-based applications that can be accessed instantly from anywhere, with the flexibility that IP delivery gives them versus legacy satellite distribution that is much harder to deploy in new applications. Now deployment can be minutes versus what used to take weeks or longer.

As the world grows increasingly reliant on cloud-based, remote production technology, what are some opportunities for Zixi?

The move to the cloud and remote production are all things that our customers were already putting in their long-term plans, but COVID was an inflexion point that caused them to act immediately. We have seen a rapid increase not only in our IP transport but the use of our ZEN Master control plane that allows operators to configure, monitor in real-time, and get reporting on their infrastructure. Consumers of satellite, and the satellite providers themselves have been moving to IP for its flexibility so we have seen record growth this year and are hiring across all functional groups in all of our global locations to keep up with demand.

Finally, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I’m pretty passionate about tennis, so I have really enjoyed watching the US Open and now the French Open on TV. I played in college, but have now passed the family business on to my sons, so when I am not working am usually in the car to practices or tournaments. Can’t wait to be able to go to a Caribbean beach and have an umbrella drink while reading a book without having to worry about a COVID tests coming and going.
