Rasantha HettiganthrigeSenior General Manager, Engineering & Operations (CTO) at Mobitel
Rasantha currently assumes the duties of the Senior General Manager Engineering & Operations, 52 years old, married and got a daughter of 14 years of age. This is his 25th year in Mobile Communications Business. He reads about business, technology and prominent personalities, a movie fan and enjoys a wide variety of music and travel mixed with a bit of adventure.
In 1992, he joined the country's second Mobile Communications Services provider Lanka Cellular Services, which was a Singapore Telecom's Joint Venture start-up, as a Communications Engineer and subsequently in 1995, sent on a three months secondment to the parent company as a Senior Engineer, to work on the GSM Cellular Bid for Indian Circles. Since then up to his departure from the first job in 2001, he had assumed a number of positions like head of customer care, Network Development Manager, Product Manager, Dealer Manager, Y2K Project Manager and the Head of Network. Achieving the GSM roll-out planned for one year in six months and designing a full mobile network with a limited mobility infrastructure and thus saving the company from a Regulatory Penalty of LKR. 50 million were main achievements of Rasantha as the Head of Network at Hutch.
Mid 2003, with the commencement of the GSM roll-out he joined Mobitel as the General Manager Engineering and Operations. His prime responsibility is to ensure that Mobitel acquires the appropriate Network Infrastructure at optimum capex per subscriber and operate them at optimum levels and phase out impaired infrastructure at the right time of its life-cycle in a planned manner. This includes Building a technically competent team with right work ethics & skill set, completion of each "Stage" the network roll-out, vendor evaluation & selection, contract negotiation are his main tasks while carrying out the operations and maintenance of multi-technology / multi-band mobile network ie.GSM, 3G & 4G networks with multi-vendor platforms. Under his tenure, Mobitel managed to launch South Asia's first 3.5G HSPA network in last December which also the world's 7th HSPA network & demonstrate 4G LTE capabilities for the first time in Sri Lanka. Also recently Mobitel demonstrated 4.5G with Carrier Aggregation (CA) as South Asia's first. As an industry first, Rasantha pioneered the acquisition of Customer Experience Management System for Mobitel and in the process of implementing the same with the expectation of taking the company's care proposition to the next level. He serves as a permanent member of the SLT Group's Technical Sub-committee.
He holds a bachelor's degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from University of Moratuwa; the most sought after technological university of the country, member of the IEEE and Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL). On invitation, he addresses various international telecom conferences on areas of his interests like Next Generation Networks, Mobile Broadband & Digital Inclusion, Smart Cities and moderates panel discussions.
He serves on the SLIIT's industry collaboration board of the faculty of Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering and as a Visiting Fellow of the University of Hertfordshire in affiliation with Sri Lanka Telecom Degree Awarding Program on an honorary basis.
